The Familiar Place
36 x 48” (1.5” deep)
2024
A quiet expanse of water shimmers beneath soft morning light, each ripple catching the sun in a fleeting constellation. This painting captures the hush between movement and stillness—the meditative rhythm of light dancing on water.
Layers of translucent blues evoke depth and serenity, while glints of light offer a sense of wonder just beyond the surface. A moment suspended, both infinite and intimate.
Crafted through layers of translucent oil paint on gallery-wrapped canvas, The Familiar Place reveals a luminous depth that shifts gently with the light.
This painting is part of an ongoing exploration of natural light and water, reflecting a meditative attention to the everyday poetry of water and its movements.
Technique & Craftsmanship
Built up through over a dozen translucent layers of oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, The Familiar Place achieves a luminous depth that shifts with the surrounding light.
The painted edges extend the composition seamlessly, inviting a continuous visual experience from every angle. Signed by the artist and sealed with a UV-protective varnish, the piece is crafted to preserve its vibrancy for years to come.
The Familiar Place has been exhibited in Westport Connecticut and San Francisco, California.
A Note from Laura
While working on this piece, I was thinking about the way water holds light—not just on its surface, but within it. That shimmer you catch for a second, the way a wave bends the sun—it feels both familiar and impossible to hold.
The Familiar Place was my attempt to pause that fleeting moment, to create something still that’s always quietly moving. I hope it brings a sense of calm and wonder into your space, the way water always does for me.
