silent current

30 x 30 (1.5” deep)

2025

In Silent Current, the movement of water becomes almost whisper-quiet, its flow distilled to soft, shimmering pulses of light and shade. The composition draws the viewer inward—tidal rhythms and luminous reflections merge into an elegant field of aqua-grey and pale ivory. The work captures the hush of a current felt rather than heard, inviting contemplation and stillness.

Technique

Painted in oil on canvas at 30 × 30”, Silent Current was built through successive layers of transparent glaze and delicate brushwork. The palette remains intentionally limited: soft grays and muted blues meet pale neutrals, allowing the light to emerge from within the paint. Each layer blurs the one beneath, creating a sense of depth without structural distraction—so the water seems less a surface and more an atmosphere.

a note from laura

This piece emerged from a desire to explore the unseen momentum beneath a calm surface—how water moves even when everything appears still. With Silent Current, I leaned toward minimalism, letting the patterns of refraction unravel quietly across the canvas. The scene becomes less about an instant and more about the continuous drift of light, movement and memory intertwined in subtle motion.
