on vacation
36 x 36 (1.5” deep)
2018
In On Vacation, sunlight reaches all the way to the sandy floor, casting a delicate net of caustic light across pale turquoise water. The painting captures that suspended, weightless feeling of floating in shallow, crystal-clear water on a bright day, the kind of moment that asks nothing of you except to be there. Cool blue gives way to soft sand tones near the bottom, where light and shadow ripple in constant, gentle motion. This original oil painting brings the calm of clear coastal water into any space, from private residences to hospitality interiors and healing environments seeking a sense of warmth and ease.

Technique
Executed in oil on canvas (36 × 36"), On Vacation was built through a dozen layered glazes moving from cool blue at the top into warm, sandy ivory at the bottom. The caustic light patterns were painted in soft, networked strokes that mimic the way sunlight refracts and dances across a shallow sandy bottom.
a note from laura
There's a moment, floating in shallow water on a clear day, when you stop thinking entirely - when the light moving across the sand below becomes the only thing happening. On Vacation came from that feeling: total presence, total ease. It's a painting about the kind of stillness that only comes when nothing is being asked of you, and the water and light are doing all the work.
