Held by the Current
60 x 40 (1.5” deep)
2025
Held by the Current is soft and expansive, evoking the quiet calm of being suspended just below the surface.
Gentle patterns of light drift across the canvas, creating a sense of depth and rhythm that feels almost meditative. The palette moves between pale aqua and soft blue, echoing the hush of slow-moving water on a still day.
It’s a painting that offers space — for breath, for reflection, for stillness.
This piece is currently being exhibited with Stephanie Breitbard Fine Arts in San Francisco, where it is part of their curated collection of contemporary works. Serious inquiries will be connected directly through the studio.
Technique
Built with thin, layered oil glazes, this piece was shaped slowly over time. The surface was softened with each pass, allowing earlier marks to blur and dissolve like memories in water.
The brushwork remains delicate and restrained, focused more on atmosphere than structure. The goal was to create a sense of immersion—of looking not at water, but through it.
a note from laura
This painting came from a quiet place. I was thinking about early morning swims—the kind where the world hasn’t started yet, and everything feels suspended.
There’s a kind of trust in those moments, a letting go. Painting this felt like stepping into that same stillness. I tried to carry that feeling through every layer, to build something that feels calm but alive.
