fluid prism
60 x 48 (1.5” deep)
2024
Fluid Prism invites you into the subtle architecture of light and water. Expansive and serene, the canvas holds the hushed interplay of reflection, refraction, and gentle movement. Layered muted blues dissolve into paler blues and soft warm greys, creating a luminous space where the surface seems to breathe and shimmer. The composition is minimalist yet rich in nuance—allowing the viewer to linger in the drifting patterns of light and stillness.
This piece is currently being exhibited with Illumine Gallery in Palm Springs, where it was part of my solo show Refraction and is part of their curated collection of contemporary works. Serious inquiries will be connected directly through the studio.
Technique
Crafted in oil on canvas at 60 × 48″, Fluid Prism was built through multiple translucent glazes. Beginning with a cool underlayer, I gradually introduced warmer tones of silver and ivory, feathering each edge so that light appears to originate within the paint itself. The brushwork is quiet and deliberate, allowing the surface to ripple gently without interruption—so that the effect is less about detail and more about the overall atmosphere of illumination.
a note from laura
This piece emerged from a fascination with the moment when light passes through water and fractures into shifting prisms of color and motion. With Fluid Prism, I drew closer—not to the horizon, but to the surface itself—letting subtle ripples and glints of sun become the landscape. The result is ambient and meditative, a field of pure presence rather than a fixed place.
